Odds and Ends

John and I are reading in the living room.

"Mom?" John says. "What does M-E-N-A-G-E, and then an A, and then T-R-O-I-S spell?"

I know that some of my readers are from the South, and have likely tried this already, and I'm pretty sure I remember my dad telling me about this trick, but for anyone else who hasn't done this, you absolutely must try this immediately.

Take one can of sweetened condensed milk and remove the label. Put the can in a big pot, and fill the pot with water until it's covering the can. Boil the water for 1-3 hours (I did 1 1/2 hours), watching carefully to make sure that the water is always over the top of the can. Remove from heat, and let the water cool down, about 30 minutes. Open the can carefully. Eat with a spoon, or dip vanilla wafers into it, or pour it on ice cream. Yurm.

Overheard: "I'm too good-lookin' to put on a pair of bunny ears."

  1. I don't recall menage-a-trois being mentioned in Harry Potter...though Goblet of Fire came close to including one...

...also, does this milk concoction have a name? Every food from the South usually has a great name (well, except 'fried chicken'). I'll be disappointed if it doesn't.

  2. It's basically an easy way to make dulce de leche, and it's fabu. I don't know what they call it in the South, though. It was also a favorite of a Russian friend of mine, who just called it boiled milk, I think.

And no, the menage was not in Harry Potter. Hee!

  3. So the menage must have been in one of the many porn magazines you leave scattered around the living room, I presume.

  4. Only after being your roommate. I got the idea from you.

Nice -- the word verification I have to type for this comment is rawsx! O ZE WRENCHING PERFECTION!

  5. Snorf!
    OMG. An ENTIRE CAN? Hello.
And what did you tell your little reader, pray tell?

  6. Dude, I didn't eat the entire can all at once! Of course, I'm not saying I didn't want to. We still have some left over! I can hear it calling now!

Here's how I responded, eventually: "Well, it's a fancy way of saying a group of three peopleOH HEY WOW IT'S TIME FOR A SNACK OF BOILED SWEETENED CONDENSED MILK! LET'S GO!"
